Meet Red Balloon Bookshop! They specialize in children’s books, although they have books for all ages. Thank you Julie, who has been with the bookshop for 27 years, for taking the time to share some information so we can learn more about their wonderful store!
What do you do in your store to nurture your community culture?
We have a lot of author visits, with many successful parties going along with the visits. Many of the authors live locally. Every December we ask our customers to buy books for the kids in our local school homeless program. They always exceed our expectations. We know many of our customers by name, and make sure to talk with them if they need to talk about what is going on in their lives. Bookshops are more than just a place to buy books.
What’s something you feel people should do more of?
Read to their children! We have an excellent community of readers, and our sales show that children are reading and being read to. I would love it if the whole world could follow.
What’s the most recent kind gesture you received from someone you didn’t know?
Our customers are continually surprising me with their kindness. This past Christmas we received cookies, cakes, fudge, and tips! We received so many tips we decided to have them all go to the charity I mentioned above. Our customers gave many books. We are always given compliments. People are so good, and I want the world to know that.
What makes you say YAY!?
My family, friends, coworkers. My son finishing his senior year in college. My dog. A cockapoo. I have a Yay! Cockapoos! magnet on my fridge, of course. My brother writing a successful musical. Knowing Spring is just around the corner. It is isn’t it?
