Meet Winchester Book Gallery, another one of our amazing customers! They are located in Winchester, VA so next time you are in that area, be sure to check them out and share in their YAY!
What do you do in your store to nurture your community culture?
We have a lot of store events – almost every Friday and Saturday in fact. We have book signings, live music, once a month Friday Game Night, and we participate in First Friday – The First Friday of the Month we like to do something special in Old Town Winchester, supporting the arts and the great stores of downtown Winchester! The Book Gallery is offering 10% off all books and 20% off all cards during the First Friday Arts Celebrations!
We support our local library and our local schools and do multiple school book fairs throughout the year.
What trend do you see in your indie business that you’re excited about?
We do believe there is a real trend in the “return” of the local, community bookstore, and this is very exciting. We participate in Shop Small Saturday (American Express sponsored), and in Independent Book Store Day which was in May. Last year, Independent Book Store Day was a HUGE success. We also celebrate Plaid Friday the day after Thanksgiving.
What’s the best advice you can share that will apply to everyone?
Don’t give up!
What’s something you feel people should do more of?
What changes or improvements do you have planned for your business in 2016?
We hope to capitalize on everything we have learned in the last few years, and just work toward making The Winchester Book Gallery an even better place to hang out!
What’s the most recent kind gesture you received from someone you didn’t know?
A man bought a card – then returned later and handed it over to be delivered to a clerk who he had treated rudely earlier in the day. Needless to say, his apology was overwhelming.
What’s a success you’d love to see someone close to you achieve?
In general, true happiness and constant joy.
What’s been one of the most pleasant experiences of running your business/your job?
Seeing the community become more and more accepting of our store, and participating in our event. It has taken a few years, but we do believe we are creating a special spot for our customers.
What successful choices have you made in your business that others should consider doing?
Lots of research into your field and then just keep trying until it seems to be working. Then don’t stop – don’t take success for granted. Keep working at it.
